Default mega battle table

i've just started drawing up plans for a mega table. its going to be 3x4m when finished, and i estinmate it will take 3-5 years to complete. it will rage from open battle ground to trenches to forgeworld's forteress wall and into the city. as it is such a large table i'm looking for ideas as to area themes. any ideas?

Wow that's one serious project!!!!

3-5 years, forgeworld fortress, thats crazy!!!

Right, ideas....

Well, I think it should start off with a cratered landscape, with trenches and stuff up to the walls. then a few streets with barricades and stuff. I would use the Cities of death buildings. Then have some objective to go for, maybe an Imperial temple.

Please post designs and your ideas, this sounds awsome!

yea thats going to be crazy!
like cag said, i would have, outside the walls, trenches, with bunkers linking some together, craters, smashed up buildings (not slightly intact, but maybe small sections of walls surrounded by rubble) and definatly some burnt out vehicles and walkers. leman russes, chimeras, and sentinals work really well for something like this. i would have one to three main centerpeices on the right, left, and middle of the tables. a cathedral or temple in the middle, maybe a communications center on one side, and maybe a big bunker complex or adeptus mechanicus factory on the other side.

3x5 meters? thats about 10 by 16 feet....THATS INSANELY LARGE!!!!
if you are going to make it that big you HAVE to have places were people can walk in and move their models around. otherwise you will have great terrain in the center were no models will be because they cant reach that far! you will have to think about this, because what do you want it to be shaped like? i would recomend having like an H, with each section roughly 4 feet across. then you can have, in the center of the middle part of the H, the forge world walls. then this will have a definate border between the city and the outside of the walls.

RIght, You would need a space cut in the middle, I know it sounds Crazy, but people will still be able to move thier models then

For the Areas
Area 1 - Jungle Terrian / Rocky Terrian / Snowy Terrian
Area 2 - Cratered with Buildings
Area 3 - Imperial Buildings
Area 4 - Trenches, Bunkers, Weapon Emplacements
Area 5 - The City Wall
Area 6 - The City with Lots of Large Buildings
Area 7 - The Imperial Temple / Ad Mech Factory / Sutible Building

IF you want a good scenario, make it so Bombadments such as Basalisk and Griffons cannot attack the city by creating a Sheild Pylon or two.
I read about them in the book Necropolis.
They stand quite tall, about 6 foot on a 28mm scale. but all you need to do is buld them to look like Radio Towers.

i don't need those. its a display piece. i only enjoy modeling. not big into the game. i'm trying to do along the same lines for fantasy, on a slightly smaller scale including calste port and surrounding town. i like the adaptus mechanus idea. didn't think of that. had the cathederal idea two. thinking of doing it notre dame style. i was also thniking of an inquisitorial palace, but amn't sure on that one yet. i'm just trying to get the basic plans together right now. i'm converting a lot of my current models at the moment to fit in, and am trying to get a rough number of the amount of models i still need. this means that a lot of my white consuls are getting touched up(or in some cases completed!), so i should be able to get some photos of them up soon.

well if you make something that ginourmas you would have to make it so people could play on it! i think that would just be a waste of talent if noone was able to use it.

Are you actually gluing models and stuff onto it to make it into a giant battle scene?

it wouldn't be a waste to me as my joy is in the building painting and converting and writing armylists. i don't play much. howerever i am going to put it together in about five pieces so thateach bit can be used for small battle fields. i'm undisided about glueing yet. any other display pieces i have have been glued, but i'm unsure whether i want to have such a large range of models(hopefully including a titan duel!) permanently stuck to the board.

A quick built very basic fire base on the edge of no-mans land.

i've only ever made small pieces up to now, but as i'm a lot more equiped financially now, i decided "screw it!i've wanted to do it for years!" so im hoping to start on the boards themselves within the next four two five months, begining with the cratered battle field.(just waitnig for some scenery from forge world!)
i really like the idea of a hstily put together fire base! thanks!
the titan duel isn't definite yet, as i'm not sure how flexible the FW titan kits are.

i know its kind of off the point, but anyone know how to post pics because i've got some good ones for the messy desk contest!

You are just like me when it comes to actually playing, I'm much more into the modeling aspect of it. are ou planning to have it be a diaramma or an actual battlefeild... which would be able to fit like, 5 way battles! I would actually try to come up with a story for the table, and then make it so it fits... what battles where fought there, who has come into contact with this world ect. it would not be able to be a forge world and still have craters and trenchwork on a plain. mabby a hive in the city part of it, one with a lot of walkways and spires, so the battle goes on at eye level in the city, either in the middle of an H or even a U, with the end up against a wall, then you could put a mirror up and make the city look twice as big. it would also pave the way for plains and outskirts, a farm, or even a tau/alpha legion outpost in one corner, undetected by the population.

Another thing that you could try is to have the craters coincide with the battle fought there. if it was a large-scale imperial gaurd battle, you should have a few deathstrike missle craters and some all-but-destroyed tanks, but if a waaaaagh was masacered there, throw in some discarded roks, and a few orky fortifications.

another major thing is to document yourself building it. Take some pictures, post them here, Email them to a few choice people, and you might be able to be recognised for a huge acheivement.

It'd think that the imperial/adeptus mechanicus base should be in the center and some sorta seige going on, chaos or orks would make sense to me.
Awesome idea, whatever is chosen

You have my respect, I would love to make a game room with a mammoth table in the middle, but that would mean relocating to another house and probably dispensing with the wife. Still, That would be so cool.
I had an uncle who converted his basement into a huge train set (12 by 20 feet), complete with Mountains, a village, a huge slot car set, multiple train tracks and switch yards. He had over $3000 worth (of 1950's dollars) of trains and I do not know how many hours he spent on it. It was amazing. Eventually, his eldest daughter had to move back home with three kids in tow, so the trainset was taken apart. But in the early 1960's, it was wonderful to behold.

3m by 4m That's 9.8x13.4 foot
That's bigger than many peoples bedrooms!!!

Good luck anyway...I'm filled with dread at the thought of having to make two 3x4 foot boards that have stuff on them.

well this could go many ways. i would first of all like to ask who the main battles are going to be around because this could decide the terrain. is it orks vs guard with space marine allies? or is it necron or nids?

i ask this because most races would destroy forest areas rather than march through them (yes i know ive been reading Macbeth. curse you senior english) so you could have a forest on one edge leading toward civilization. and as you go from a sirene forest to the city scape the world becomes alot more ragged and cratered. also if your doing orks an ork rok would be a great display piece. and you could also add fortified buildings and trench lines all over the place.

also the worlds largest gaming board is over 12 square feet in playing area and is set out with a long center with areas branching off to the sides.

Thought of the Day: Need to sign brothers up for Imperial guard and also what does the imperium use for fuel in civilian transportation

I had to do seven 4 foot by 4 foot boards of ruined cities for a convention. had to make them portable. I still think you need to set the board in the "H" shape and let people play on it.
