Default Need your help (yes YOU) with TYRANID basing (PIC provided)

Hey all!

I am creating a Tyranid army, but I am not quite sure how to make the bases.
I was given this picture the other day and it really struck me. As this was sort of the mental picture I had. Something like you might see if there were a planet of GIANT ANTS building colonines.
Here is the picture:

I can just see nids clambering and scuttling over that in on great hoarde. Sort of like in Starship Troopers.
So, any tips on how to make this on individual bases? And do it with little to NO money involved. (gotta wactch my spending on the hobby at this point)
Originally I was thinking cork all chopped up somehow. But I couldnt get enough cork w/o going to the store and buying a cork board.

TIPS? IDEAS? TRICKS? EXAMPLES? ETC?

thats really cool.

the cork + some coarse and fine sand should be great for the loose volcanic rocks on the right of the picture, but the bit i really like is the flowy piece on the left...

that looks a bit harder to do. maybe a big blob of thick PVA in teh right shape - allow the outside to harden and while the middle is still soft, manipulate it a bit with a toothpick or needle to get some interesting shapes (you can even prick it when the outside is hard and the inside is still liquid to get some oozing from the cured outer shell.

its harder to describe than i thought though its a great idea. im assuming theyll be in the same colour grey?

or you could always go outside and pick up some stones. its cheap and they're everywhere stick a few small ones to a base, drop sand and/or gravel into the gaps and viola, instant rocks.

If you need to you can find a big volcanic rock on the ground somewhere, bring it home...
...and beat the crap out of it with a a lump hammer...

volcanic rock pebbles for bases and not a single $$$ needed.

pour some plaster of paris into a disposable paper plate and leave it to harden. as it dries it should crack a bit and will be easy to break up when you take it out of the plate. again, stick it down and fill the gaps with sand.
