phil trench board - 40K Terra

so i got an 8x2 ft sheet of polystyrene, spilt into 2 4x2 sheets.The same in ply wood.

so the idea is 2" deep trenches, an airfix bunker in the middle (modded slightly to fit 40k figures)

after the trenches are cut im not too sure where to go.......

The paint looks really bright in this, it's actually darker.

MUCHO MACHISMO!!! huge cannons there Hairy!!!

Nice work bud BUT i seems a little flat. Maybe glue some sand or other type of texture thing to give it more depth. then paint and drybrush for the effect!

Nice job though and i like the stepped feel!

Hey I have that same bunker...
The only suggestion I would have is try and find some pics of WW1 trenches for inspiration.

Looks pretty good so far though dont forget to slope the front of the board to meet ground level otherwise that'll end up funny during games.

well Ive also got the problem with fire steps, as you can see the trenches are pretty deep and i'd need 1" squares or a 1" strip but this would restrict movement.

well any trench isnt going to be spacious... put a strip of something along the wall to make a firing step.

well i'm gettting some razorwire tommorow so that will be a nice addition to break the terrain up.

I went to GW today but they didn't have any razorwire

(why am I not suprised?)

instead i got some granite balast and some static grass(not GW)

not sure how i should paint this now?

any ideas?

GREAT!!! I got ideas!!!

Make your own razor wire. There are several tuts here and I have a very simple tech that is effective. I'll make a tut soon but till then here is the best looking/closest to GW razor I have seen By our very own Juddski! Barbed wire

Now for the ballast and flock....Wood glue the ballast EVERYWHERE on the board. then use a thin coat of watered down wood glue coat the ballast. then paint or wash as you see fit. after it dries get the good ole superglue and superglue spots of static grass where you see fit!

as far as colors and painiting
i would shy away from alot of the staic grass since "no man's land" is also no life land
i would go with scorched earth colors
dark browns and redish browns to show the blood soaked ground

that is gonna be a beautiful table piece

wood glue or paint sprinkled with sand/cat litter ,then painted in colours Warmaster Romulas has sugested IMHO..
when doing trenches the fact that they are threre means the eneny is going to try and eject them,so the surrounding terrain is going to be blasted ?
like Baron von Lexus said ,look for ww1 insperation ?...you can also get some nice effects with gloss paint and other non watersoluble paints on styrene ,just be carefull not to use it too much

I kinda did a mix of everything.........

the balast was applied in/on/around the craters, sealed with PVA and then washed it with chestnut ink.

added blood stains/splashes (needs blending in a bit though)

had an oil spill with blue/chestnut/green ink but it disappeared!:eek

razor wire will be added later (when GW avtually gets some in

)

and remember i've got another trench board to do after this, so I might add something else to that..............bunker mounted volcano cannon?........
