Default Pins/studding on power armor?

Right, looking through the Dave Taylor custodes army, and i've decided to do some studding to my shoulder pads on my terminatos, and maybe some on their greaves, etc.. The problem is, I don't know any good methods, and I tend to avoid GS like the plague because... well.. I suck with it!

I know Dave said (the site no longer says it) he used a certain MM of ship building pin (for model ships) to add in, and looking at said supply from what I can find online, they look perfect for the task!

However, I can no longer remember the pin's MM as the site changed the conversion kit due to the particular company Dave used no longer makes the MM he used.

So, my question is two fold... What MM would work best, and/or what are other methods you gents would recommend. I'll even try a GS one if I need to.

im gonna take a guess
since the greaves are barely a CM and you want multiple studs
i think maybe
.10 mm would be good
just a guess though

funily enough i was having a chat with the guy who inspired the studded pad on the latest SM frames. he was saying that all he did was carefully shave off all the full stops on the sprues that he had laying about and stick them on. it's fiddely but very cost effective.

And i'm assuming a to scale model shop that offers terrain, etc.. Would they have such?

I'd like for about 4-5 on each armor piece I stud.

@hairy: true, but ship builders pins won't cost much, and already have the round, smooth look I was going for. By the time you factor in the labor for cutting and shaving the stops off, the GS and the GS I will envitably waste smoothing them out, and the cost of bandaids/neosporiun for the cuts, it will come out to about the same.

you don't even want to see my fingertips after that dread!

well according to the bloke i talked to it was a really simple process that involved nothing but a knife and some glue, and a bit of patience...and a good deal of care with the knife no green stuff in sight! he had a model in his case that recieved the treatment and you couldn't tell it from the moulded shoulder pad on the sprue.

I'll certainly keep it in mind, and when the time comes, try it out. But at this point, the tingly numbness in my fingers has me not liking my knife much.

Get a pin and some PVA glue, use the pin to put dots of glue where you want the studs. Let it dry and the add a bit more glue to ech stud and repeat till the stud is the desired size/height!

Works for me!

I'll keep that in mind then.. Simple and quick is best...

I don't know if you guys realize the scope of this.. But I have at least.... 120 + 16 +16 +14 + 10.... And scouts, so that is.... another 10... A grand total of 171 marines to build, convert, and paint...

So i'm looking for ways to expedite the process

In that case go for the glue, that way you can do the models in batches.

the thing i find witht he glue idea is that the initial blob spreads and flattens out a lot. pert might know a way to stop this but i lost patience with it.

Actually...

Add thirty to that, and a tech marine..

I forgot about the combinations in Imperial Armor Apoclypse... DAMN YOU MART007!!!!

Plus.. Due to Ancients Assault Force and Strike Eagle, the chapter will have FIVE dreads at a minimum... 3 furioso, two long range I believe.

Simple-let the glue start to dry a bit before you use itlet it form a skin then its ready to use.

Its a trial and error thing!

I've also been told that washing up liquid (mixed in tiny amounts) will keep both paint and glue from 'Spreading'...

Or was that the other way around and it HELPS it spread?

think that was the other way round nano, washing up liquid breaks the surface tension allowing the fluid to spread more easily.

Nope, there was definitely something you could add to paint to make it stay put... in fact... was it glue?

Well.. I'm soon to get my battle company and resin custodes... So we will see via experimentation!

I'll try one of each method, see what I like best!

Washing up liquid does indeed break the surface tension of white glue and water based paint, causing them to spread out. It's in the glycerin. I recommend very small escutcheon pins (if you can find them). They have hemi-spherical heads, unlike normal sewing pins. Ship pins, like sewing pins, are almost flat, and would take a lot of glue build-up to be presentable. 201 marines will not be easy. Find Someone with a LOT a RTB-01 Beakies, and go from there.

Can you possibly link me to these guys?

The pins will be a constant on my Devestators and termies, ao about... 20 devs, 16 termies... 36 Marines... As little as possible fiddling with glue would be best.. And I knwo Dave told me it was ship building pins... Used on the old wooden ship kinds.. Blast it, where is that link...

check this stuff out and give me an opinion?

Rivets/Pins:
www.walthers.com -- search page

Drill bit to fit said rivets/pins:
www.walthers.com -- search page

The proper drill bit sizes are #67 for the smaller size is 300-152 and
#57 for the 300-153

Also... Anyone know how the HELL to make a MK 5 helmet?

Pic of the finished bit:

Again, not my own work, but I liked the look and it comes like 100-150 a pack, so I thought it was a handy solution!
