Default SpartanTau's Introduction

Slightly stolen from my member profile at ATT, with a few small changes...

Real first name: Mike

Age and gender: 19 / Male

Location: Beverly Hills, Michigan, United States (normally)
East Lansing, Michigan, United States (during the school year)

Occupation: Student, Lyman Briggs Calculus Learning Assistant

How did you get into wargaming? My best friend in 5th grade introduced me to Warhammer (he played Bretonnians and his older brothers played Chaos and Lizardmen). He invited me to go up with him and his brothers to open gaming, so I went and bought a Space Marine Combat Squad. From there, I was hooked.

How did you get into Tau? After collecting about 2000 points of Space Marines (and becoming highly involved in the fluff aspect of the hobby), I read into different races and their histories (as Space Marines were getting to bland and I wanted something that could be my own), and the Tau way of life appealed to me for many reasons, mostly the way that everyone fit together and had a place, but also for their technology (I'm a physics major).

What would be your second piece of advice (after "read the freakin' rules") to a new 40k player? Read the freakin' rules again. I cannot count how many times a game lasted much longer than it should have because an opponent did not know the rules for his own army. Going along with that, know your codex cover to cover. If you can't (basically) quote what a piece of wargear does, or what the statline of a unit is, you need to re-read your own codex until you do.

What is your army colour scheme? For Tau: Codex Grey body armor with Catachan Green/Goblin Green/Dark Angels Green camo on the cloth undersuits and various pannels of tanks/suits.

How did you find this site site, and how long have you been a member? I looked at the Second Army links at ATT, found Boot Camp (I'm leaning towards Imperial Guard for my next army), then saw a link to 40kTerra from there. I joined today, and as this forum is much different than ATT, I decided to post this today as well.

What are the origins of your username? The Spartans are the MSU mascot (I'm highly school-spirited), and the Tau part should be self-explanatory (as I only really play Tau). I also wanted to keep my user names uniform on any forum that I join, just so that it is easier to cross-reference exactly what I've done for the online community.

Where and how often to you usually play? Over last summer I tried playing every week at Open Gaming, but since I am up at State it is a little harder to find a game. The Fortress (East Lansing, MI) has helped that a little bit, along with a kid in my Chemistry class also playing, but I still haven't had that much time to play.

What armies do you have, for 40K or another system? Tau, which is my main army, and an old, Third Edition Ultramarines force. I don't use them any more (I didn't even buy the new codex).

What is your favourite and least favourite army to play against? Least favorite is Tyranids, but mostly because they are so alien in nature and don't follow seemingly any rules for what a military force should be. My favorite is Necrons, but only because the few Necron players I've gone against have been really nice and overall friendly during all stages of the game and even when I just see them in the store. I guess it's something that comes from leading metal skeletons that forces you to be happy...

What is your best and worst 40K moment? Worst would have to be playing against kids who don't know the rules for their own armies, especially when you have to look them up so each individual turn doesn't last 20 minutes and then you can't find the special rules in their Codex which is the open store copy... My best would either be my first win (against Imperial Guard) or the realization that came from knowing that the Greater Good was the right path for me.

What does/do your family/significant other/friends think about your 'funny toys'? Surprisingly, I've never had any complaints. Of my friends that know I play, they are genuinely interested in how my games went that day (since I usually hung out with them after my open gaming nights), some go with me to the store and watch me play, and some have asked me to teach them.

What are some of you other interests? Ultimate Frisbee (I'm trying out for the club team at State), drawing, writing (I'm working on a near-future sci-fi novel set on the moon), and hanging out with my friends. I'm also trying to learn how to play the guitar again.

What is your favourite band? Right now, probably a combination of Jupiter Sunrise, Holiday Parade, All-American Rejects, and Driving East.

OH and PS:

Check out the Battle Field. It is a great place to test out new armies or even your tride and true tournament list. Plenty of friendly competition and great tips from all those that vote.

Thanks for all of the warm welcome. It's nice when people actually take time to read and post.

Sir_Servo :
I will definitely look into that. I wrote up a small, elite Imperial Guard list just for fun (it may be my next army), and that sounds like a great place to try it out. I may also send the Ke'lshan 4th Mechanized over that way as well...

Ikarus :
Great site. I've only looked around for a little bit, but I can already tell that it is promising. I will definitely try to add to the Tau discussions, especially with a few tricks I have up my sleeve.

Dragoon King :
I don't know about Chaos, a little too spiky for me. The models definitely are some of the best that GW has put out, which may lead to a fun modeling weekend for me. I will definitely check some of that stuff out here.

Brother Warchild :
I did notice the games that you mentioned, but didn't completely understand what they were about. I probably should go back and read up on it. Do you currently have any games active there?

Lord Commander Erus :
I hope I enjoy my stay as well. I can already tell that it will be a long one.

It's always good to be welcomed, and I will definitely try.

Baron von Lexus :
Just browsed through your Death Korps WIP blog, and I have to say that it is pretty sweet. I may also come to you should I decide to start and Imperial Army. Those models just look amazing!

Warmaster Romulas :
Jackson - I had a few cross country races there. It's a nice place. For pictures, my camera is currently down, but once I get one I'll definitely post the Ke'lshan 4th. The STC also sounds pretty cool, and I'll definitely browse through that. Thanks for the help.

Hm.

I will say this - he sponsors 40kTerra ton. (He will kill me for saying this)

I'm not sure how much discount his store gives, but if you mention that Ikarus - or Justin Wu from 40kTerra told you to go there to game, . It'll make him happy, knowing that his sponsoring of 40kTerra paid off =) Not sure what benefits he can give you, but i wouldn't recommend bothering him about it XD... because I'm not sure if he wanted me to get people in MI bothering him haha.

Just look for a man named 'Angelos' Haha tell me if its true.. he says he has a warehouse full of wargaming stuff. lol.

No worries. I may even forget about it by the time I can make it out there (which won't be for at least a month). I wasn't really looking for discounts either. Once I do make it out there, I will definitely mention you and 40k Terra and find out all that information (I'm making my cheat sheet for the visit already).
