Default Curse you Windows Vista!

Ok... My Fiancee was nice enough to purchase Neverwinter Nights: Diamond Edition (NWN). We have also recently got a brand new desktop from my work. Excited, I loaded the thing on and it installed, and the launch menu comes up just fine.

I hit play, and it won't play. Vista searches online for a compatbility fix, and ends up telling me they won't fix it. Bioware has to. Well, I search on Bioware and the other related sites, and find out Bioware is refusing to update/support NWN for Vista, at this current time. So both copmanies are pointing the finger at the other as to why it won't work.. Here is my system info, in case whomever decides to pity me needs it:

Computer Specs:

Processor:
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+. 2.00 GHZ
Memory (RAM): 960 MB of RAM.
System type: 32 Bit Operating System
Harddrive Space: 260 Gig Harddrive
OS: Windows Vista Home Premium

Thanks in advance gentlemen!

Ha ha ha! This is pretty much exactly what happened to me! I got a new computer (2 Duo core, good choice!) with Vista on, and a programme that wasn't compatible killed it!

I think all you can do is wait, for the moment anyway. I'm not that much of a technician, but could you run the game in compatibiliy mode for say, XP? I'm not sure if that would work though...

For all Vista's strong points, it can be a right pain in the ass too!

AHA! I had just found that on a forum I was searching. What in the depths of *%$@ is that, and how would one try it? I am not very savy with having to do such things.

I'll guide you through it.

1. Find the game on your computer.
2. Right click on it, and select properties (it'll be at the bottom)
3. At the top there should be a few different choices of sections, click on Compatibility.
4. Check the box next to 'Run this game in Compatiblity mode for:' and select whichever system it works on.

I hope this works! And if it does, enjoy!

Its also you fault for being drawn into the whole "Windows vista is amazing, buy it now. If you don't, you will drown in a pool of inefficiency and low performance" Crap!

Im not going anywhere near Vista for atleast 6 months. Firstly its going to take half your processing power to run the damned Operating system. The other thing is compatability. Thats for programs and hardware.

My computer runs great with XP Pro:

AMD Athlon X2 4400+ 2.2 Ghz
1024mb RAM
320GB Hard Drive
7600GT Graphics card

By the way, do you have a graphics card Erus?

Doh! NVidia 6100 (Gforce). Came with it. I wouldn't have got Vista, but I needed the new deksdtop, and they don't sell desktops with XP ANYWHERE in the US anymore hardly.

Argh! Sorry about that Erus! I wish I could help more, but past that I have no idea what else to do!

Oh, and my computers specs. (Add it to the list!)

Intel Core 2 Duo 6300 1.86 processor
2 GB. RAM
320 GB. Hard Drive
Nvidia Geforce 7900GS Graphics Card

(The Welcome Centre on Vista sure is helpful!)

But, you se... I am not so worried about part system, or the graphics. I don't play many games online, except DC and Diablo II. If I played something like NWN online, I would RP. And my experience is 99.99999999999999% of these games are non-rp... Which, in this ones case it is extreme as it was made off D&D, kinda bugs me. But, when I get the money, I will inevitably buy NWN2. Did they expand the class or prestige class selection at all? That is so far my biggest let down for the game. Not a bad selection, but especially in the area of prestige classes...

One more class (the warlock, which isn't that bad... but I don't particularly like it), but, several more prestige classes, the Duelist, Warpriest, Frenzied Berserker, and a few others I'm pretty sure.

No Shifter though... not that it matters.

So long as they didn't touch the weapon master, we are cool. Now, i'm off for a swim and some pool. Yes... I am actually getting extended amounts of sun today!

I did, but Bioware has said they will NOT be patching NWN for Vista. And I can't even get the game to patch because of the compatibility issue.

ah! such is life when we have become slaves to the eternal missery of micro$oft...
like cag, i'm ignoring vista altogether and simply waiting for our current pc to blow-up at some point in the near future. once you can buy a pc with vista as standard & minus all the bugs and get it for cheap, then my family will upgrade!

anyways, as a funny side note, we've had a similar problem recently with companies blaming eachother for an annoying problem, only this one involves a squirrel's nest, a telephone pole & a cable box...
(phone company; 'yes it's our pole, but the nest wouldn't be there if cable didn't have a box there so it's their fault.'
cable company; 'yes it is our box, but the nest wouldn't be there if it wasn't for the phone pole now would it?!')

cheers!

well the best idea is to not wait but to just upgrade individual parts of the computer one at a time. for instance i upgraded my video, next is the ram, then so on and so forth

Yeah.. My old ones power supply went in a fantastic pop of sparks, ozone, and fried something internal. The cost to repair it was nearly as much as the new comp (whoo employee discount!), so I just bought the new one since the dead one was getting old.

This happened to me... twice... and my graphics card's fan was gone (as in, it wasn't working, causing the card to overheat, and thus make the computer restart... I could use Word, go on the web, and stuff, but I couldn't play ANY games, excluding minesweeper).

However, I still have my ancient monitor and broken speakers (only one works)... and, I need a scanner for school, plus we need a new car, so, I have to wait for that flat screen monitor, a decent pair of speakers, and whatever else I can think of...

I can pick you up a decent pair of speakers for 10 bucks, includes a subwoofer, but the shipping is gonna be hellacious.

HA!!!

I can get a cheap pair of speakers for less than $5... I think, thats how much my old ones cost. I bet I can get some for about 5-6 dollars.

Macs are good! I think the next computer I end up having will be a Mac, its just I wanted something I'd tried and tested before (and I knew would run all my games and other software!)
