Euro 2008 Qualifying Round - 40K Terra

Well, pretty soon the UEFA Euro '08 Football Championships Qualifying round will come to a close, and the stage looks set for some surprises.

Firstly, the Group of Death, Group B:-

A new-look Scotland side were drawn into a group including the World Cup finalists, France and Italy, plus quarter-finalists Ukraine. After the draw, nobody would even pray for Scotland to qualify, it was considered a waste of time, so Walter Smith and the Tartan Army had to turn to some other gods, hence, The Glasgow Chainsaw Massacre. It seems to have payed off.

Scotland will go into their last two games at the top of their group, a point ahead of Italy and 2 ahead of France. After defeating Ukraine 3-1 at Hamden today, Scotland dumped the Eastern European side out of the race. They need only 4 points from their next two games to secure qualification. One of these games, though, is against Italy.

Italy have two games to go. Their next game will be against Scotland, who play Georgia on Wednesday. This would give the Scots a four point lead over the Azzuri before the game. They need to win their next two games to secure qualification.

France also have two games to go, although being 2 points behind leaders Scotland, and having no games left against the two teams above, it is entirely in France's control. If Scotland draw of win against Italy, and France win their next two games, they'll dump Italy. If Italy beat Scotland, and France win their next two games, they'll dump Scotland. Either way, they need another 6 points.

Group D:-

Wales are already out of the tournament, 10 points behind 2nd place Czech Republic with only another 9 points on offer. Germany have already guarenteed qualification, with the Republic of Ireland and the Czech Republic vying of second place, though the Czech's have 3 points more on offer than Ireland, making them favourites, in addition to a 5 point lead on the Irish.

Group E:-

It's all to play for in Group E.

Croatia are top with 26 points, but are not certain of qualification. They have a further 6 points on offer, and a 3 point lead on England in 2nd. They look favourites to finish top.

England and Russia could also take top spot, if Croatia lose 6 points and the two teams both take 6. However, this is impossible, as the two play each other in Moscow soon. That will be a vital game, and defeat of Russia will dump them.

Group F:-

Northern Ireland have a surprise chance at qualifying in Group F. If Spain or Sweden lose all of their remaining games, and NI win all 9 points available, they'll go through.

If there was a team of the Round award, I'd personally destroy those responsible if Scotland didn't win.

No doubt, I think, that Scotland are amongst the best teams in Europe. They've played three games against the World Cup Finalists, and won two of them. Like I said, they've surprised everyone by going top.

Hmm... sadly I do not pay attention much to sports. The only one people really care about here is the Cricket... which is to long for me.

All I can say is that my family is depressed because the Philly's, after 14 years of failing to do so finally got into the play-offs... then didn't make it to the final thingie...

Anyways... the only sport I care about I can't watch here... because of some strange reason (the sport in question is the oh so internationally famous American Football,
