Default First match ever! NEED HELP!!!!

So fellers, me first match is today at 3 pm Pacific, so i have bout 2 hours to prepare.

heres me list, i guess....my first one...also might need help with it...

HQ
Sm Commander
Stormbolter
Iron Halo
Power Sword

Troops

1st Squad
8xmarines w/ bolters

So anyway today i play my first match against a guard army, my secon match is against crons most likely....

I'm no Marine expert, but that seems pretty balanced in my view. SMurfs exel in small pt games so dont worry to much I think your ok.

well, let's see here...

first off, just a quick heads-up; don't post individual pts costs/upgrades as it is against GW's IP policy. just list the final unit totals.

+++ pick a defined role for him; either combat or shooty. being a simple commander, he's honestly not that hot in combat actually! i'd go for a combi-plasma gun, power toy and maybe a combat shield...
basically, you're taking this guy for his Ld-boosting abilities - not his fighty ability! (chaplains are your kick-ass fighters.)+++

Troops

1st Squad

+++ with only short-ranged assault & rapid-fire weapons, these squads ideally need a rhino to get them into the thick of it... walking means roughly 3 turns of taking enemy fire on the chin. while marines are solid, some of them do fall!
also, consider a heavy weapon of some sort for your first squad. a lascannon or rocket launcher is ideal as you have 0 anti-tank right now! (and it's fairly probable you'll end up seeing at least 1 av12 or better tank even at this size game!)+++

Fast Attack

3rd Squad

+++ you need more men... 5 assault marines isn't anything to write home about really. sure you'll kill a few squishy things like guardsmen, but anything with a decent save will bog you down for a bit. (despite their name, assault marines are one of the worst dedicated assault units in the game!)
also, the combat shield isn't really needed on the sergeant as he's an 'Up-graded Character' or 'UC' for short. UC's cannot be picked out except for a couple of rare instances... thus, he really doesn't need to worry much about being picked on by power toys for example untill he's the last guy left! (at which point, he's not going to win anything anyways so you're best to let him die so you can then shoot the offending enemy!)+++

Grand Total:613 pts

So anyway today i play my first match against a guard army, my secon match is against crons most likely....

be prepared; if the guard player is cruel, you'll be facing a leman russ which is av14 on it's front facing! get a lascannon or rocket launcher into your list... guard love their heavy tanks and their heavy weapons... use cover to your advantage and make sure you deal with the big threats right away; lascannons, rocket launchers, plasma guns, russes, basilisks.

the necrons are easily handeled if you keep one general rule of thumb; pick on 1 unit untill it's totally wiped out! don't try and shoot up a bit of everything because usually the 'crons will just stand right back up... as long as you wipe out a unit and there's no other 'active' model of the same type within 6", they don't get the 'we'll be back' rolls!
top threats are; destroyers, wraiths, tomb spyders. however, in general stick to targeting the models that have the 'necron' special rule. if the total number of 'necron' models ever drops below 25% of their starting number, then the whole army phases out!

Depends on what army your playing. Get your Assault squad in as quick as pos. You wont be up against to much armour at this point level which makes your 3+ save invaluable. The key is be bold, dont hang back get your bolters into rapid fire range (that hurts) you should be fine.

Being an Eldar player I have been up against a few C/SMurf armies, they are more forgiving at this level than other armies so use your advantage.

I do have a RL in first squad

RL=Rocket Launcher...

Also, all those units i should have ie: Rhino, chaplian, i aint got no more money captain!!!

You may think about dropping some wargear and squeezing a Rhino in there, mobility and Marines is frightening - in fact I would do that.

the guard can actually get 2 russes into a 600pts army quite easily if the guard player wants to be a real jerk!
hell, they can even add-in a basilisk w/indirect fire on top of the russes too...

mind you, if the guard player does that, by all means tell him/her off as that's pretty low...

Could you squeeze a Dred in there that may help? but could be a drain.

A Rhino is very handy in that you can use it as mobile cover as well, that can be invaluable

if its a 600pt match then yes unless your opponent is cool with you going over the pre-arranged limit.

Cut back on your commander, he doesn't need that Iron Halo but do keep the p.weapon as he might not be the best Space Marine HQ in combat but he's still extremely good when compared against IG/Tau leaders in that respect and it would be a shame for him to hit with most attacks, wound with most of those and then fail to kill his enemy because they rolled their armour save. Its up to you to decide what role he's directly going to play but i'd suggest changing the S.bolter for a bolt pistol (unless you've already modelled the storm bolter in which case dont worry).

Ignore the others when they say add certain things- as you've already mentioned, you dont have the time!

Swap the Sgts over between 1st & 2nd squad as 2nd squad is more assault oriented and could really benefit from the power fist. other than that it difficult to alter your list more than this in the time available.

yea, generally people will let it go if it's say, 5 points over, but when you get past the points number by around your basic unit cost [like 10 ish points over] then it's definitely iffy.

ok, im more of a troops guy, so heres what i would do:
drop terminator honours and wargear on sargeants, drop iron halo and storm bolter on HQ.
that gives you about 90 points to play with.
give the HQ a bolt pistol, add 2 assault marines to the squad and give the assault squad melta bombs. this way, you have more assault marines and some measure of anti-tank. youre also only 3 points over 600

if the guy is a D#(* and has a couple of tanks i would then switch the flamer in the tac squad for a melta gun.

thats just what i would do based on how i like to build my lists. some people like the built up seargants (i kinda have the tyranid mentality with all of my armies: more gribblies!)

Ive proven victorious lads....
my first macth against anyone went quite well....

I only lost 3 marines and 1 assault maarine.

He used 3 sentinals, which just dropped like ten ton flys, then his guardsmen were tereibly weak in close combat, it was beautiful.

i just assaulted a lot haha
during my first match the dice gods blessed me so,

then i played the cron dude....didnt go to well...lol, any tips on fighting crons? haha

against the necrons, the golden rule is to concentrate on 1 squad untill it's compleatly knocked down/destroyed. deny your opponent his/her "we'll be back" rolls. as long as there's no 'active' models of the same type within a certain range and no tomb spyders present, the necrons can't make their WBB rolls.

in terms of which units to gun for first, i usually prioritise as follows;
1) destroyers; they're fast and dead shooty! but there's only ever 5 in a squad so they make an easier target than say the 12-20 strong warrior units!

2) wraiths; again, they're fast and lethal in combat. (well, they tie you up good!) use their small squad size to your advantage and take then down asap! be sure to use just basic guns like bolters/heavy bolters as they have those 3+ armour/3+ invulnerable saves.

3) monolith. a good necron player uses it to re-roll his/her WBB rolls. if they start doing that, then the 'lith needs to die fast or the necrons will simply out-last you.
