Default Game Store Kids - The Rant

Damn them all! You know who i'm talking about, if you've read my recent posts (Unpainted Models and the Leman Russ Mockery) then you'll understand my anger. My pure RAGE at the new spawns rushing into GW to buy pretty figures and proceed to act as if they know everything. I'm talking about the Game Store Brats.

Sure, it's ok if they're controlled. But in general, they're not. They don't finish their models, and complain that they can't paint as well as the Veterans of the store and run off crying. They're pointless playing against because your bound to get some subtle new rule introduced in this game and then pushed aside as if it never existed. And of course, there ARE no rules when your playing against these complete idiots with intelligence ranging from a Tea spoon to a potted plant. They dis-regard everything about 40k, including the time we spend on making our models as perfect as we can possibly paint.

For example, the last game i played was against a GS Kid. Unfortunately. He didn't seem to understand that the person that owns the models, removes them from the table. And he literally picked up my Termie Sargeant and threw him onto the next table, causing the players there to stop their game and glare at ME. The little kid decided he'd like to look very innocent. (The game was then won by me. I was being nice for the majority, but after that incident I rushed his entire army with a combination of assault marines, A Close Combat based command squad and the remainder of my army.) He actually cried after that. I felt happy, even if that sounds incredibly evil.

And then there's the fact they have caused the game to be dumbed down extremely. Overwatch was removed, and that was one of my favourite rules. And now, they're even creating beginner-pre-assembled models (Battle For Macragge, for instance, you only have to put the Backpack & Bolter onto the marines). How are they EVER going to learn if they start off with crap like that?

*Sighs* Ban them all from stores i say, or at least stop them refusing to lose when all their models have been removed from the table and officially, they HAVE lost.

Thanks for Reading, Comment! Now!

EDIT: And for those of you who don't know me, and have never seen a rant of mine, I have the name "Rabid Ranter" for a reason. And for you 40kTerra veterans, i'm back, and i'm extremely grumpy. =]

I think I must be extremely fortunate to have never had a run-in with any such GS kids. But from what I've heard from multiple sources, they are indeed a nuisance and often worse.

Show no mercy in playing 40k with them.

I cannot and will not game in any store for that reason! I hated them when I was a kid! The staffers, even though I had a small rant about them recently have to have patients of steel - no iron.

While I've never had the problems you seem to be Killer, I have had my share of game store kids. We ended up inducting them into a campaign with set rules and then taught them to play, model and paint properly. Kids want attention and want to win. They are seriously lacking in the areas of patience and sportsmanship, therfore they must be taught these qualities.

There will always be those who resist, but let the other kids take care of that. After learning to play from someone who knows, they spread the knowledge like wildfire. It's unreal how soon you will see the changes. All it takes is getting one kid into the mindset and letting him teach the others.

Then again, that means you would have to be willing to teach the kid...

thats the #1 problem i have with them. in my rant about unfinished models, i didnt mention one thing. in that battle the staff gave us two dice to use as a special little gimmick for haloween. they were called pumpkin dice and gave you +1 to any roll (2 because 3, and so on)
so everyone had two, but the kids opposite of me gathered everyone on their sides pumpkin dice and used them for EVERYTHING. yea its a stupid little gimmick, but dont exploit it! have a little courtesy, its just a game! aak!

I know that I was once a game store kid, but I was quickly taught by my local group how not to act. Now I help anyone new who comes in to not be the game store brat. I work on that aspect very hard.

exactly! but only some of them are like that, ive seen an 11 year old that knew more about tyranids than most of you will, he was controlled and understood the game, my little brother is the same,he enjoys painting the models, and while he isnt great, he enjoys it and learns at the same team.
i hope you will agree that if the children do understand the game and do have patience that they can be good poeple to game and paint with

In my group in Texas we actually had one of the game store kids join our "away from the store" game club. He played a White Scars army that we could only best on an open board. He made it a point to learn how to do things once he'd played one of us and asked a few questions.

Usually you get the "what's the best unit, that's what I'll take", this kid learned how to use the units and knew what sportsmanship was. He still wanted to win, but he did it fairly. That's what makes a good games store kid.

yea uhh...so if and when i ever play a game at a gw, which i think is where most of this stuff happens [i've never seen annoying kids at my loval private shop...ever! haha] i'd first call up one of my buddies and make SURE i played them instead of someone i know. or maybe i'll just hope i get lucky and avoid all these annoying people...BAH!

i still cringe when i read that people THROW other people's models....that's pretty sickening..ugh. good rant, my friend. good rant indeed.

and 1 question: what was the overwatch rule ? :]

This is the thing. My brother is almost 13... when we got into the hobby he was like.. 11. I turned 16 this november... two years ago, when I got into this hobby, I was 14... to many people, this is to young.

Yes, I am a terrible painter (working on it!) but I understand tactics, I understand stats, in fact, I love them! I can undestand how to use things just by looking at them on my codex. I am memorized both the Space Marine and most of the Tyranid Codex to the point were I don't even bother to use my codex to write up army lists... I know all the points, rules and the like in my head. I have memorized the wound and hit charts... and, while my brother hasn't done so, he knows the rules, and he understands mostly everything.

If I encountered this "game store kids" I would get mad. These are people who give the kids and young teens who do, for real, want to learn how to play WFB and 40k a bad name, to the point were people just refuse to play with them. Now, I'm not saying this is unfair... since these kinds of kids are the majority of the kids that play 40k...

And, Cesitial guardian, I salute you, I'm not sure I would have the patience to explain sportsmanship to someone else.

The Overwatch Rule, r4wr89, was a very nifty little thing. I can't remember the rules for it exactly, but basically when it was your enemies movement phase and they moved into (THINK it was 12" or it might have been your max firing range) range of your units, your men could take a potshot at the enemy. Very useful if your facing something like Tyranids or Orks =]

yea celestial guardian, kudos to you. MoW, i think the "game store kid" averages to under ten, or maybe around ten ? :] i doubt you and your brother would count, especially since we know you and i don't think you'd be bratty snobby and annoying :]

I've never played any mega-battles or really and instore games. I do go to my GW to talk about army building and get rules help and what not on a regular basis. From what i observed there are to kinds of Kids, the kind that put alot of time and effort into not only painting and assembeling they're models but also saving up money for them. I like those kids
Respectful, quiet, good kids just enjoying they're hobby.

Then there are the kids that got mommy and daddy to buy them all the "best" models and assembled they're cheese army that their loser 17 year friend put together for them cause he can't even socailize with people his age wholike the same game as him cause he's a jerk about everything and refuses to be civil.
then they talk down to you because of your lack of experiance and try to embarrase you infront of the staff so they look cool to a group of friends outside eachother but end up just arguing with the staff about the littlest rule so they can have any edge they possible can.

OK YAAAAAYYYYY I GET TO USE MY KNOWLEDGE OF SECOND EDITION!!!!!!

Overwatch.

You sacrifice your own turn (from the shooting phase onward) I.e. you get to move then go into overwatch.

while in overwatch you do nothing during your own turn.

BUUUUUTTTTT....

During your opponents next turn during the movement phase (yes, you got to choose to INTERUPT their move) you can shoot any weapons you have on overwatch at anything you can see....

IE that nasty Eldar War walker with the arsenal of a god but stays to cover except to shoot....

you can blow it out of the sky with your devistator squad that is on overwatch.

It was awesome....

Ahhhh the days of RT and 2nd Ed.

****slips into nostalgic reverie****

BTW killer nice rant.

overwatch was removed not because it was an awkward rules or such, but because it made the game very boring and predictable;
turn 1: the entire space marine army goes into overwatch. then the eldar do the same and move a couple of units which are still out of sight...
turn 2: the space marines stay in overwatch...

you get the idea... it was sad really. now granted you could still keep it and simply limit it to say only 1 squad/turn who can go onto overwatch, but overall, i'm exstatic that it's gone and allowed real tactical movement to become the priority!
of corse, there's nothing stopping anyone from using the old overwatch rules in their own games!

as for the dreaded 'game store kid', you need to simply have skin of adamantium! however, a few tricks we use to try and get them a bit more under control while they're playing are;
- if they start cheating, simply start 'killing' some their models or a unit! (ie: guess what?! a S'D' orbital barrage has just hit your terminator unit! don't try and say your scouts have 'feel no pain' again!)

- if they start knocking on someone's painting, we tell them that they're librarian isn't 'what you see is what you get' legal anymore because he's simply a large blob of blood red paint!
or else we tell them if they're models start falling apart on the gaming table, then the model/s in question count as casulties!

- if they start trying to argue rules, it's blatently simple; pull out the rulebook! if they continue to argue, then again, we just 'kill' a few models!

- if they start arguing background and spouting nonsence, we simply tell them that the games designers have begun writing a horrible fate for their favourite character! (who's typically a named special character to boot...)
'oh haven't you heard? jervis himself has said that marneus calgar has just been eaten by a large squig in the new space marine codex coming out next month!'

just some little tricks we redshirts use... granted, we enjoy being somewhat cruel most times!

cheers!
