Well there is about 3 other big tabbletop games out there, but non as almighty as GW. I do it for the Painting & Modeling etc, then the Background, then the game.

For me it goes:

Background, Game, Modeling, Painting.

Thats only because I'm good at learning background, fairly good at the game, alright at modeling, and can't paint to save my life!

the background is amazing. i mean a few decades of backstory really piles up. honestly, 40k is almost begging for a decent movie, the fluff is so well developed already!

and as for gw's competitors...there aren't really any cause GW is old enough to have a good grip on the tabletop miniature market, although a few games are catching on. flames of war and warmachine seem to be on the rise, and heroclix was popular a little while back. still though, there doesn't seem to be another popular game/company that can even try to compete.

oh well...XP

Thats that thing... GW is so big (in the table top battle stuff at least) that no company right now has the money, or the fanbase to defeat them. Given enough time, I bet that GW will have a harder time selling their products unless they do something about it.

the biggest thing IMO gw has going for it is the quality of their models... no other company has an end product that is as highly detailed and customisable as gw!
for example, there's a quebec based company that has models that are pretty much on par with gw's in terms of model detail - but they're all metal models!!! that means more $$$ and there's little oppertunity to convert something unless you're willing to put a good deal of work into it... (not to mention the need to use super glue, and i'll bet that each of us has at one time or another, accidently glued ourselves to some object when using the dreaded stuff! )

gw's plan of trying to make most/all squads into plastic kits means that their models are;
a) easier to assemble and not as messy as you only need plastic cement wich doesn't bond to skin
b) plastic is easier to cut meaning there's an endless scope for converters!
c) the design of each kit allows for near-endless variation in the models.

just my 2 cents worth...
cheers!

GW is powerful because, like you guys said, of the big fan base, awsome backround, and highly customizable (and mostly plastic) models.

for me, i play because of modeling, gaming, backround, painting.
you cant always play, but you can always work on your stuff to make it better. i love gaming. win or lose, i almost always have a good time! the backround isnt as important because i really have no more resources to get new stuff. ive read all that i can, and cant get any black library books (no $ that i wouldnt rather spend on minis.) so i rely on Revenant to fill me up (Rise of the Tau!! WOO!!)

yea i think you're definitely right. the problem with having a "monopoly" on the market is the lack of competition. competition between companies breeds improvement, advancement, and lower prices...of course, nobody can top GW. like stitch mentioned, companies with similarly attractive products will struggle because GW is trying to change everything to plastic...even companies that have metal models and want to go plastic will have trouble cause it is probably expensive to get the new molds and machines and whatnot.

and dan-rise of the tau is AMAZINGGGGGGGGGG..haha

just another thought or two! :]

actually, this may be the one half decent excuse for GW's pricing... plastic models, because of the molds, are actually MORE expensive to make than metal ones, in the short run.

In the long run (like maybe, 2-3 years), it becomes cheaper. Hopefully this means that while prices may, in the short run, be expensive, over the next few years, perhaps the pricing will go down?

Oh, and these other companies... are their models cheaper than GWs?

I doubt the prices will go down in themselves but they might not rise as much as inflation...hopefully.

EDIT: transfer the sidenote to a new thread

Baron, that comment, while nice, is probably best for another thread... however, I got involved through DoW. I loved the game and heard there was this "board game" that is was based off of, intrigued I googled 40k, and found these awesome models. That Christmas me and my bro got battle for macragge.

well MoW Gw has already started giving us more bang for our buck in the new devastator squad. it used to be 5 plastic space marines and one metal version of every heavy weapon. you could get all this for 40 dollars

now you get 5 plastic space marines and 2 plastic versions of every heavy weapon for 35 dollars. your getting a whole lot more for 5 dollars less.
