| I usually recommend a balanced army for a newcomer to 40K, but if those are his two choices I would recommend 'nids. They can be fairly shooty, fairly balanced, or fairly assault/CC. Plus, too many Tau players around now-a-days. And people are scared of 'Nids. Just play Space Hulk (the boardgame) someday and you'll see why I twitch when people mention genestealers. |

| Yeah I agree, I think he should go with Tyranids. That said though, I really despise that Tau so I would never recommend them to anybody! ![]()

| As much as Ralei is horribly biased, I join him on that one. Tyranids are a nice army to take, which can be pretty much any army type (shooty, CC, mix of both). Tau are much more of a 'one trick pony' list, and new players normally end up putting too many points into wargear and not enough into models (I did it myself once!). And Erus is right, just mention you're using Tyranids and if the other player doesn't even look worried in the slightist, well, he's gotta stronger heart than I have.

| Indeed Nids are a good place to start. Highly versatile and balanced yet they can specialise like no other army can.

| Conscript ![]() | ive been a nid player for 12ish years now, and while id suggest them for a new player (a nid army is pretty good no matter how many gribbly mutations and strangenesses you have) id suggest tau once he gets more experienced. generally, i think people who like tau really like tau and he should at least try them out sometime to see what he thinks. having said that, im an insane kinda guy who curently has 5 marine armies on the go... so even i wouldnt trust myself much ![]() |

| The 2 main people I regularly play have Tyranid and Tau armies. Without them, I would never have honed my practically all Assault Marine army into the beast that it is.

| i'd say for learning the game mechanics and such, work up a 500-750pts army of your favourite looking army... once your cousin has the basics down and such, then go for a proper army of whatever it is he really wants! ![]() i recomend this approch because i've seen a fair few people who get say a chaos army because they've been told that chaos is dead 'ard to beat, only to quit because they hated painting chaos marines! it's no good trying to get into the game and picking a 'hard-core take 'em all' army, only to find out that you hate the looks of their models! hope this helps, cheers!
