This evening Senator Obama clinched the Democratic primary.
This means that for the first time in American history an african american will be the nominee of one of the parties for President of the United States.
As a lover of the political process in my country i never thought this would happen in my lifetime.
As a Boriqua (Puerto Rican) i have seem many horrible things in the hearts of men. Rascism is rampant throughout the country. I am so proud of my fellow countrymen who decided that they are not their father's generation.
I am so pleased with the result.
Now if only he can be put into office in November the healing in this great nation of ours can begin.

What is your oppinion of this occasion?

I think it's great. I hope great things can come from this, I'm not skeptical just worried that there may be people willing to take things to far, radicals and dissenters who can't stomach change.

I hope Obama is president for both terms if elected, or if McCain wins. To the victor go the spoils!

anyways... i think that obama won because most people (not all) are looking at race as a factor instead of his actual policies. in fact i got called a racist once because i said becasue i hate obama's policies.I only hate his policies, not his race.

Well, this isn't my opinion but my pastor's friend thinks that Obama is the anti christ . Well, it is going to be an interesting year.

Either way Americans will suffer, as both are morons. Mccain is a "lame duck" and Obama is inexperianced. But still either is preferable to that socialist Clinton! This country is and always will be messed up until the government is the way it should be OF, BY, and FOR the people not made up of those who are wealthy enough to run!

It doesn't matter who is president anyhow, the president is slowly becoming little more than a figure head whose only job is to draw your attention away from the "man behind the curtain" so to speak.

It is of course my opinion but I think this country left the path of democracy long ago and is now little more than an aristocracy!

Well I could actually care less about the historical aspect of this election, as I feel it has clouded the judgement of the voters. I mean you do have to ask the question are people voting for the man or the race?

Don't get me wrong it is still quite the historical moment but we shouldn't vote based on race instead of the better man. Hazzahs to history, now may the real decisions begin!

it's a step in the right direction as there is still a huge amount of bitterness and resentment in the US between all the minorities...

still, it's overall not a pretty situation;
- obama may have made history last night, but i feel that the greater masses don't want a president from a visable minority, which will overshadow this first historic victory. (the bible-thumper belt especially will vote against the democrats!)

- even IF he wins the whitehouse, obama will still be faced with the fact that various groups will openly, perhaps violently oppose him due to his race.

- for us here in canada, obama is not a friend. he's too protectionist and that means bad news for the canuck economy.

so while a small historical milestone may have been reached, i have a suspision that it will end here as there's still to big a part of the US that is stuck in the past and won't want to change the status-quo.

I'm happy that the situation has become more diverse in the racial sense. Sadly, I stand with the others in wondering if this happy change has come too late to be of any true value. The nominees are all poor options.

Gone are the days when one can vote for the better of two (or more) good Americans.
Now are the days when one must vote for the lesser of two corrupt Americans.

I've always been a big fan of the US, and have served and paid my dues in the USMC, and while I still love my country, and pray for her and her leadership, I feel in my heart that the populace is being deceived by its own government on practically every level. The Congress is corrupt, and even though our current President is a GOD-fearing man, the mistakes made by his office are causing more suffering than blessing to the American people.

The democratic election process 'can' work, but it is not currently.

These are tumultuous times and things are unstable. Even though it would be a great milestone, I fear electing Obama would be bittersweet. He means well but may want to take too big a step forward for progression, trying to build on such shifting sands is fools errand. This country would have a hard time weathering such change and what it really needs now is stability.

Just a reminder, keep a cool head in this thread. This is a touchy subject.
The fact that a black man made it to the nomination isn't that meaningful to me. I see him just the same as I'd see any other person of any ethnic background making it. But, I know why it's significant. Of course I know that not all people share my views on race and ethnicity, and that some people think that he shouldn't be president because he's black. I'd make a bad politician, because I see all people as the same, and equal.

i may not live in america, but i am pleased at what is happening, not that many years ago, people made black poeple walk on the other side of the road becuase they thought they werent good enough, they were treated terribly because of their skin, that has changed, and with obama in power, so will america, for the better.

september 11, war on terror, the earth is getting more violent, economic troubles, and new diseases.but thats just my opinion.

OK, folks, this is how I see it, historically. It is a milestone, just as, 48 years ago, when a non-Protestant was elected. The fact that the final two in the Democratic Party were a woman and an African-American is a great accomplishment for each of them.

As for my political views, I'll treat them the same as my religious views, and leave them in my head. Any more posts that promote one political party over another, and this thread is history. There are no political parties in the 40th millennium. Thanks.

But back to the topic.
I think this is a pretty big historical achievement and I hope he doesn't fluff it up like our first Female Primeminister did =\. I want him to do well, as my views are the same as *Forgotten person who posted it '-.-*. I don't see a skin coloured person, I see a person who has different skin colour. Person before the skin colour, people aren't a colour with a person as an extra now are they?

So, on this view. I think he will do much the same as any President from my limited knowledge. Very good at the start, but by the end of two terms people don't mind getting in a fresh face.

I'm actually quite happy. I do intend on voting for Obama. I think he's the right guy for the job, and as much as I liked Clinton, I've never been a fan of Hilary. I don't think she had any business as a Southerner, running for and winning a Senate seat for New York, and I have never liked her attitude. I already said I won't vote for any Republicans, seeing as how Bush has not only screwed us over economically, but also alienated us from the rest of the world.

And as far as Obama being the Anti-Christ... he definitely has my vote then!
