Default So Im looking for a new army

So with Apoc. around the corner, and my current frustrations with my current army, I believe it is time to start a new one. I know that starting a new army will not solve my problems with my old one, but I just need a change.

My current army is IG ( horde, shooty, armored )

Now what I am looking for is something that will be fun and semi-successful. One condition is that I am really not looking for a SM army or Chaos as I just dont like them much. If you could please vote and give me a brief explanation as to why that army would be a fun army to build, collect and play.

a simpler solution could be to just completly change your army list, look to the doctrines for inspiration - pick a random mix and just go with it, try and get it to work despite what would normally be considered horrendous clashes.

NECRONS NECRONS NECRONS!!!
Neccys are super-cool! Theres alot of different things you can do with them paint-wise (the rusted gunmetal look is played out!)*look at mine* conversions are relativly easy to do.
Small variety of minis turns some off, but it definatly makes building an army easier!!
Somewhat cheaper than other armys to amass. Great fluff background!!

#1 reason: "RESURRECTION ABILITIES"

Orks- the new codex comes out in spring 2008...so thats a plus. Also they can be used as a horde of very effective close combat troops and are endlessly amusing...

I'll go with Orks or Kroot Mercenaries if your willing to convert a lot.

I think the orks because green is best and with the new codex coming out they are getting better plus with better minis as well.

Tau.

Its pure powergaming.

I love it.

You can blast people across the board. If they get close, you can fly away.
Whats bad about that?

actually, orks are released proper in january! the daemons/hoards of chaos 'dex is spring '08...

anyways, i'd go for eldar or tau. under the apocalypse format, both are readily available as allies to guard without needing to wrack your brain for a decent reason why they should be fighting together!

for example, guard & eldar allies;
- the horus heresy
- the battle for ichar IV
- armageddon invasions
- gothic war
- any attack involving the necrons!

tau is even easier to evision with the simple reasoning, the guard forces fighting alongside them are the remnents left behind after the aborted damocles gulf crusade... having no real way to back to imperial territory, the guard have instead thrown their lot in with the tau for the greater good!

cheers!

'nids! Fast, deadly, Close Combat!

yes, they are horde, but other than that... they are very different from IG!

IG don't always have to be horde Masterofwierdness, in fact, most people don't go for the horde with their Guard (which would be very easy to do)

Grix, if you want a real challenge for creating tactics and the best army lists, then go for DE, as once a player knows how to use them properly, they are virtually unstoppable.

Eldar are cool but Tau are better. For the most part Tau beat the IG and Eldar at the 'massive ranged firepower'.

As much as i hate them (for not being needed, for their battlesuits and for their lore) I`d still choose them as a main army

Tau. I love the super-tech aspect, as well as the long-range deadliness. And since Apoc boards will be big, that will come in handy.

I think you should go for Mont'au, though. That's the ones that follow Farsight. Not as many Crisis Suits and armour and stuff, but Farsight himself is cool, plus his 1-7 Crisis suit bodyguard (!). I'd also go for some Kroot Mercenary Allies, while you're at it.

I know that the Necrons are having an update to the codex so this may be one way to go. I have recently been playing Eldar and the diverse nature of fast attack and elite units is v good, not only that but you can go mad with the colours not IG Greeny brown.

keep in mind though when it comes to apocalypse gaming, you *must* have a viable story as to why armies are allying to eachother...

dark eldar are a pretty hard sell in that respect as they're very similar to tyranids & necrons.
still though, a few possible story lines could revolve around the idea that the guard are of corse a traitor guard force and have promised a lesser archon a large amount of slaves in exchange for acting as a mercenary terror force...
or else the dark eldar are 'counting as' a simple eldar pirate force and not a true kabal or wych cult...

cheers!

I'd go necrons, the monolith is incredible and the models are easily convertible!

Good Luck (and if you need any i have some )

i'm voting for eldar. the model range is truely spectacular and there's enough variety in the list to keep anyone happily trying new stuff for a long time.

I would suggest Orks, as with the new rumors of the dex, you can play them along the lines of what you have tried before, hordish, armored, shooty. However, they are also able to run up while shooting then smack the opponent in the FACE!

For a completely off the wall/different experience, go with something like Eldar. You have to really know your tactics and units to do well, as each unit has a purpose that only really it is effective at.

In the end I went with Eldar over Orks.
I like both armies but come Jan there's going to be alot of Ork armies.
Advantages for Eldar is you can make any type of army you want.
Inf, Mech, and with no restrictions on what you can take you can do a craftworld army almost equivalent to 3rd edition.
You also have access to forge world models like fliers, titans etc.

and i don't think there's a 40k gamer out there who doesn't readily enjoy killing pointy-eared space elves either!

anyways, congrats on finally reaching a choice that you're happy with! best of fortunes with your future army.

cheers!
