Default VDR Rules Your opinion?

As you all may know, well at least the hardxcore vet. gamers from the before time (before 4th ed), maybe familiar with the good old Chapter Approved and the Vehicle Design Rules that follow them.

What I have noticed is that not many people used that around me. I mean sure, we all added gattling battle cannons, titan killer, rending turret mounted to a tank or two, which in theory would be AWESOME! Which would turn into a 500+ point tank... hmm sounds like my Stormblade but yet its not as cool.....

Anyways Im my opinion is was definitely an awesome way to customize an army but the rules for them could never be used really in anything except for friendly games where you messed around. And investing that much time and effort wasnt worth it at all.. But I loved it since it added flavor which is being lost every edition...

well, the VDR rules is one of the biggest reasons why i love astronomi-con so much. put simply, astro's 2 organisers allow VDR creations to be included in your army! of corse, you need to send in the info on it and they have the right to refuse your creation... (it's not a set of rules for creating insane & god-like killing machines after all!)
still, it's great that i can pull out my scratch-built 40k style blackhawk and have my armoured fist squad truck around in it instead of a chimera!

the main problem i saw when the local gw store allowed VDR creations was that you got perhaps 10 guys who did cool stuff that was great fun to play against with those rules, but sadly, you then had the 30+ arses who just plunked down something with as many guns as they could possibly glue to a dreadnought model...

cheers!

VDR should be used with fluff and common sense

I SEE YOU ERUS AND YOUR CUSTOM TRANSPORT!!!!

I like the rules, and when used properly, they create great vehicles to use with your army.

When abused, well they are a little points heavy so just shoot that monstrosity down and laugh. even an UBER dred can only take so many las cannon hits!

I love the VDR...As for playing them?...yeah well as you have pointed out...there were a few instances when you were allowed to use them in tourneys..mostly local stuff when the VDR first came out and a couple of the bigger ones...

For me it is simply a test of my modeling abilities...and have been workin on a scratch built (outa card and bits folks, not kits) super heavy to include with my SW army for the past year...(I get bored and put it up then take it out every once in a while and see what I can do with it...LOL) as I stated in another thread...I had a vision of what I wanted...then sat down and figured up the rules for the vehicle...after which I began to model the Forge Breaker Super Heavy Assault Vehicle, it's coming along but still has a bit to go before I can unveil it officially...The Iron Priests are taking their time as not to offend Mars

Yes Hairy I know...PICS!!!!!(soon my hairy friend)

Yea I agree, the main problem was people did crazy stuff with their models and it was unfair to those who took time and developed their creations.

I myself like the VDR and TDR very much. They have allowed me to create my insanly cheesy rules, and rules for a Mongoose and Warthog.

hmm yea i really like the rules. but someone already pointed out, it's lame if you don't work hard on your vehicle...it's also annoying that adding a bolter to a landspeeder makes it like 400 points lol

but other than that i think it's an awesome idea :] i've been planning an inquisitorial land speeder for sooooo long..and it's only like 150 points ! :]

also: this is slightly related: does someone have the link to the online VDR generator thingy ?

Actually the online VDR generator was the old first edition...the VDR was upgraded in the latest CA book...and it incorporated all the FAQs and modeller input from the initial release to the newer one...it also included the Tau and Necron VDR...get with Erus...I believe he has the newer version in PDF...if not LMK and I'll get you a copy...
