Default Who paints here?

I"m an artist, I'm strictly acrylic but I want to try oil painting a space marine, preferably chaos.

Any tips form any other artists?

Oils are actually alot easier to work with over acryllics once you get the hang of it. Blending is so much smoother, and its easier to fix your mistakes. Its mostly because of the fact that oils take forever and a day to dry, its takes several months for certain colors to dry completely.

Im an art major also, and once I started using oils I absolutly refuse to go back to canvas painting with acryllics. I think once you get the chance to push some oils around on canvas you'll fall in love with em aswell.

Somethings to remember are:

-Use paint thinner only to clean you brushes, never to thin your paints with.

- Thin your paints with only turpintine, as it is much more refined then thinner and wont cause your paints to chip later..

- Use high quality and/or student grade brushes to paint with, anything else will just leave bristles on your canvas.

- If youre into mixed media, You can paint with oils over acryllic; however, you cannot paint with acryllics over oil.

i'm in the same boat as you Dravenguild, only use watercolours and acrylics i've always
avoided oils so i don't know alot about them

this seems to be from someone who knows......not just researched online!!! I have DABBLED in oils before but nothing to speak of much, just an assignment here and there, but it seems like the same things I remember and all sounds like sound advice!!

theres now water soluble poils opn the market, from windsor & newton which my fatehr uses, which look very good. all the benefits of oils (long drying time, thickness etc) but with the benefot of water solubility do theres no need for turpentine etc

Juddski you might be interested to know this..

a ' watercolour ' like effect can be achieved with oils as well, just requires that you heavily thin your paints with turpintine. Its also much more forgiving then watercolors as well, as once you make a mark with watercolors its a done deal. With oils, fixing a mistake is as easy as wiping your canvas clean with a rag.

Just some food for thought for a fellow artist

i can't be doing with oils, they take too long to dry and having all those canvases in the room would do the wifes head in ,she's bad enough with my paper..i've banned her from cleaning up but she's obsested with mops/cleaner/polish..

i did know that(i'm not a total ignoramas)..but thanks for the info iNsOmNiAc'S dReAm..have you ever thought about doing a tutorial?

You mean a oil painting on canvas tut on a warhammer forum? No, not really LoL... As fun as that might be I didnt think that it would be appropriate for a place like this =P. It doesnt exactly contribute to the hobby and all lol.
