Default Dark Angel Allies... or who wants to help the Unforgiven...

Hello Everyone

Recently I played a game with my Dark Angels. It was a 2000 pt game and I was wanting to play a different army list than I normally take to throw my opponent. I remembered reading somewhere that even though the DA normally do not have allies, that they can sometimes ally with certain armies (most notable, the Grey Knights) and I thought I would spice up my list with a vindicare assassin.

Now my opponent was very supprised and it made him alter his tactics to allow for the assassin, but it was under protest. He wasn't convinced of the legallity of the choice.

So, my point to all this, who, if anyone can the Dark Angels let share in their battles and more importantly, where are there any references to allow this legally?

Happy Hunting!

The rules for taking allies are in the Codex: DaemonHunters or the Codex:WitchHunters

I am fairly certain non-codex chapters such as DarkAngels, Blood Angels, and Black Templar cannot take allies in their lists.

You can take a seperate detachment using its own FOC if your oppent also want to take a seperate detachment with its own FOC too. In that case DA can be allied with any army that does not have nonhumans in it. So no Orgyns or ratlings.

But you cannot just put an Assasin in your army anaymore. That was in the 2nd ed I think

"In keeping with the many possibilities for the forces of the Ordo Malleus to appear within space marine and imperial forces, deamonhunters units can be included as allies in any of the following Codex armies:

-Space Marines, INCLUDING varient armies such as Blood Angels, Space Wolves, *Dark Angels, Salamanders, and other loyalist Index Astartes Chapters

-imperial guard ect. ect.

*note that if deamonhunters are present the inquisitorial scrutiny means that the Dark Angels 'Hunt the Fallen' special rule is suspended"

that is direct from the deamonhunters codex.
the note isnt even applicable anymore
youre fine with taking the assasin. but did you also take an inquisitor? you didnt specify that, and if you didnt, then that may have been what your opponent was protesting. you have to take an inquisitor as well when taking an imperial assasin (not death cult, mind.)

but as for taking a seperate FOC, you can do whatever you want if you use two FOC, it doesnt matter if it has sub-humans, or aliens for that matter. you can take any two armies with two FOC, one for dark angels, or any other army, and one with whatever other army you want.
dark angels and eldar, or grey knights and khorne.
its possible, but stupid. why would GK and world eaters fight beside each other? not fluffy.

i take two FOC for my space marines, but its an inquisitorial detachment. all thats in it is an inquisitor, two SOB squads, and a dominion squad. the only reason i do it is because i want to split up 20 SOB into two seperate squads. i could, using one huge squad, have just one FOC. using two FOC, you can do whatever the heck you want, and alot of the time people do mass cheese lists. theres no restrictions in that area, you just need your opponents permission.

Well at the risk of being accused of threadomancy I currently use a Deathwing army with GKs taken as allies. I find the Brother–Captain's Ld10 psychic hood invaluable in many situations, and his squad's S6 Nemesis is just an awesome tool to have available in the Dark Angels extended toolbox.

Fluff goggles are definately left back on the Strikecruiser when I play....

Cheers

Fluff wise, Dark Angels won't ally with inquisition (too risky, don't want the inquisition poking around in their business) Rules wise you can with the neweest codex, but I'd slap you...lol...

In one of the Comic books Dark Angels allied with Grey Knights and an inquisitor in order to stop a threat to the imperium. They separated ways after.

For me i see no problem using any imperial army that does not include sub-humans. I don't use orgryns in my imperial guard army for this very reason(the two armies are fluffed together).

The Dark Angels according to fluff have allied wiht other imperial forces in the situation is needed but they follow their own commanders and their own interests.

I would never ever use my eldar or tau with my Dark Angels that is just wrong.

By the way you dont need a full inquisitor Lord, just an inquisitor.

I'd slap the writer of that comic book too...lol. The guard are really the only viable allies for the Dark Angels, other than other chapters. The Dark Angles can't risk having an inquisitor anywhere near them, and this was well represented in the old codex. This is yet another shortcoming of the new codex...

so i think the question is answered with the fact that yes you can take daemonhunters with dark angels. though like it's been pointed out it has some serious fluff issues, and from a deathwing perspective it has even worse issues since most deathwing are part of the inner circle. though it would make for a hell of a nasty list........

my question is do you bring just grey knights or do you squeeze in some grey knight terminators? i guess i'm requesting more info on your list that you are running.

I like to take sisters of battle or more specifically a Seraphim Assualt Squad with my Dark Angels. In Apocalpse I also use the Living Saint. I find their hit and run ability very pleasing when I want to harrasse my opponents flank.
