Anti Flyer Tactics

Okay, im sure you've all noticed now that with Apoc flyers are now legal in normal games of 40K. but the problem is, how the hell in a game of normal 40K do you kill one of these flying death traps?
In my Local GW the number of people using flyers has gone up, not dramticly, but enough so that some people have them. and the people that have them try to use them whenever possible. so, how do you kill these damn things in a game or 40K withoutshelling out the points for a dedicated Anti-Air unit thats only good for one thing?
any suggestions?

Just keep shooting at it? I actually hit one with a basilisk once. It was overing to drop off troops and my shot scattered onto it

In any case if you want accurate anti-aircraft fire then you should just het one of the aa gun things. Also remember that all pintle mounted weapons on tanks count as them now.

i know pintles and what other weapons can kill aircraft normally, im just asking for any suggestions tactics for killing them.
EG: one of mine is to take a 10 man devisator squad with X4 Heavy bolters and give them tank hunters, simply because of the sheer around of shots put by that squad im bound to hit it, and the tank hunters make even the bolters in the squad capable of penetrateing a flyers 10 10 10 armour.
and the reason i do that, because its cheaper than spending 26-40 pounds (thats between 50 and 80 $ ) for a model that im onyl going to use every so often.

Not sure what to tell you. I have a question that somewhat relates to this though. Is there anyway a flamer (template) can hit a plane?

I shouldn't think so, but something in the rules probably will let it.
I mean, this IS 40k.

And as for normally killing flyers: field your own.
Or watch enemy land units vaporize under 8 hellstrike missiles...

Yep, take your own and get some Air superiority!

I.e. Your enemy takes a Lightning Strike Fighter... you take a Thunderbolt.

Outodo them and thier fancy ships with your own!

Flamers cannot hit planes and any ground based weapon shooting at planes reduces it's range by 12"

The problem there is that the lightning is just as likely to destroy the thunderbolt.

I'd reccomend getting a hydra flak battery.
A few spare autocannons and you should be able to convert one without too much difficulty.

scratchbuild scratchbuild scratchbuild. i cant say it enough. as FW is not technically "GW Legal" and now flyers are. VDR your own and laugh hysterically at your opponent as you hit his thunderhawk with a STORMBIRD!!!

true, but then again....a scratch built stormbird...... >< stop giveing me insnae ideas, besides i cant scratch build worth a damn. but...point taken, flyers VS flyers, point taken. but, im marines, and i dont want to pay X amount of money for a damn thunderhawk! that only has 2 weapons that can hit flyers.

very true, you could always grin and bear it, or use a hydra (conversions are great) but that is about it.

The nice thing about the hydra is that once you've destroyed the flyers you can turn it on enemy ground units.
2 twin-linked Autocannons are fun when there's lots of soft targets with gooey centers.

true, true, but im marines at the moment, and the problems im having with flyers are either in 1500pts games or lower, and the big games my local GW hosts of a saturday. the former, id love to take a hydra after reading what they can do in a gaunts ghosts book alittle while ago, i think it was Honour Guard. and the latter, well, i can take a hydra, but i dont exactly want to pay for something im only going to sue occasionally at my local GW. i want something that furfills both, so, any ideas for squad set-ups? or just pay the extra cahs and get a hyperio's when i ahve the chance?

If you were a Guard player, I'd say take a Hydra or a Leman Russ Exterminator. But since you're a Space Marine player as well, try tanking a Land Raider Crusader or Prometheus. the sheer amount of firepower is bound to his something!

well i am gonna try an use a couple baal class preds but i would suggest 4 tank hunting heavy bolters. either that or take Long range Ack Ack.

hmm... i've fought fliers a couple times... teh 4 hb sound like a good bet. exterminators may work too. Either that or play objective based games.

I reckon you should just buy the taratula with the AA mounted gun.

On a side note Timber i hope that "teh" is a spelling mistake.
