Default Dreads?

So i've noticed a disturbing trend in regards to my Dreadnaughts. they get the Tar shot out of them EVERYGAME. I don't know if i employ them wrong (i like to put them on a flank to pin down/shoot up anything that trys to encircle me) but its annoying to watch them get Blown up every game usually around my enemies first shooting phase.

my question, Are Dreadnaughts to much of a liability in a Black Templar army?

hmm...well BT is an interesting army in that it can potentially be pretty CC driven. i don't know how your army list is set up, but if they are continuously getting shot up, then use its death to your advantage: if you charge with a dread and a squad of marines, then if the dread dies you will have moved a squad of marines ever the closer...right ? :]

either drop pod them down or else try and have them walk up behind a rhino or similar...

their big drawback is that av12 isn't that hard to counter... always give your dread smoke launchers & extra armour as well! it might just help them survive a wee bit longer??!

cheers!

Drop pods are almost always a necessity, really. I don't take a dread without them usually.

Extra armor, smoke launchers, and the venerable upgrade on one can really help.

Because they only move 6" per turn, it's a necessity to stick Dreads in a pod.

unless you go for the assault cannon + rocket launcher combo! you want that puppy starting on-table and slaging the enemy right from turn 1.

one way to protect shooty dreads is to always keep them in cover and thus gain your 'obscured' roll and hopefully enusre you only take glancing hits. add-on venerable and your dread is suddenly very difficult to shift without a huge concentration of effort!

cheers!

Pods for CC dreads definately...shooty dreads?...find a lane of fire on the table you want them to defend and then set them in cover to where they can still have LOS to their designated spot but yer opponent doesn't have LOS to them...and definately take smoke and extra armor for them...and then just pray yer opponent doesn't have an arty barrage which is always worked out against yer rear armor....

my dreadnought for my black templars also was shot to death in the first or second turn. always.. the only plus side to it was my landraider was never fired on as much.

Hehehe melee dreads pretty much NEED a drop pod

Imagine droping a couple ON a bunch of heavy weapons wielding squads

Can they assault the turn they drop?

Unless you`ve got utterly unlucky rolls, they should always be in assault range every time

Oh battle-ranch is just cranky cause first time a stray missle from my war walker got a hit and a 4 on penetration and a 6 on damage on the first turn (woot lucky rolls), and the second time I sent my fire dragons in a wave serpent and turbo boosted straight after it. But a drop pod and smoke launchers defiantely sound scary to me.

Hahaha, firedragons`ll bring down a lot of vehicles it`s understantable

As for the lucky shot, it happens

PS Battle-ranch, it`s only natural that AntiVehicle weapons will take out your (medium armored) vehicles rather easy if you get in their range :P

You made it sound as if they got shot up by random stuff like bolter fire

Walkers ALWAYS count as being hit on the front armor due to the 360 degree rotational axis their torso is on, at least that is what I was told.. though it may be for CC only.. My dread always got into CC because they were more worried about the terminators and the Daemon Prince!!!

I'm having problems figureing out where you get off trash talking me when you've only ever played me and lost both times

I also don't appreciate your naratives on how i'm a hugh cheater. your just as new as i am and you know when ever we have a problem with the rules we discuss it and come to a fair conclusion. maybe you should get all the facts before you run your mouth.

imagine how brutal my all-drop troop guard army would be if i could deep strike all 100 of them and then assault that same turn!

the thing to do is to use the drop pod itself to block LOS. let the pod get destroyed... now you've also got an additional piece of size 3 area terrain provided it wasn't destroyed by a 6 on the penetrating hits table!

cheers!

Um, it may be just me, but you seem to be overreacting little bit

If you find a post offensive, complain about the post, not the thread taking a somewhat not so friendly turn.

I honestly can`t see how you got offended by any other post between`s Funky`s and yours.

relax guys

my dread always used to be anihilated really quickly
so now it has a missle launcher and twin las so it can sit in the back and unload across an open area where tanks lurk

the close combat dread wont work without a drop pod, and even then it can get sticky without support

i run 3 dreads, all fitted the same way. las cannon heavy flamer ccw xtra armor. these things are my mainstay in my army. i put em behind marines and advance them with the infantry. the marines get in combat and if they need help then the biggins' get in and rip somethin terrible in the ranks of the soliders and bigg thins' that make my marines die. either that or the 3 go in on one flank all near eachother and just kinda bust up some big stuff. people are so afraid of dreads, i don't know why i think the vindicator and predator are a little higher on the killin **** list. only thing higher than a vindicator on that list is a landraider for vehilicles and termies on the infantry list. runnin 2 or 3 dreads makes people quiver in their boots making me laughmy arse off
