Default Condescending Attitudes

Maybe it's just where I'm from, but all of the people who play WHFB that I know are very unfriendly to 40k players. Our shop used to be full of games for both systems but has recently dwindled down to about 3 regualr 40k players and 20 some odd Fantasy guys...

I blame a lot of this on their attitude that Fantasy is somehow intellectually superior. And that the play out their own real life fantasies of being great strategists... Personally, I can see why they might feel that way but I feel its like comparing apples and oranges. I think a lot of the real reason is the age divide between the player groups. 40k appeals more to 14 - 25 crowd while Fantasy gets 25+. I don't really know why this is the case but I'm getting a little tired of going into the shop only to here "hey, the kids are here to play their [i]ray gun game[i]"

Anybody else have any insight on this?

1) those people are aceholes
2) it's really just them, though the reason your area has that many is beyond me
3) a lot of people like fantasy and reason like you said just because all the different guns in 40k and stuff make it more childish and them better generals and stuff for playing fantasy
4) some people are like what you said because fantasy is "the original" and "the great father" and so on, and 40k is a ripoff sort of.
5) some just feel superior, just like some people i know think that playing 40k makes you better than fantasy. it's really just the person.
things like 3 and 4 really don't have much justification behind them. overall they are both similar on a basic level, and i love them both.

I agree with that. I started out playing fantasy, but it just wasn't my speed. I wasn't bad at the game, just disinterested I guess. Since then, I've grown to appreciate the game a little more and enjoy watching others play it. On a personally note I find that I don't have enough control over my men when I'm moving them around in neat orderly squares. I feel restricted and unable to hatch my master plan.

Some legetimate complaints I've heard about 40k is the inability to declare charge reactions. The problem lies in the fact that there are no shooting modifiers, and thus, would be insanely unbalance to have a shooty army always opt to stand and shoot you before the charge. Other complaints are about mobility, but with the ammount of terrain used in most 40k games, I find this argument void. There are a ton of units in 40k that are capable of achieving serious movement advantages over the standard footsloging trooper.

40k is about as valid as it can be for a space opera universe with lots and lots of guns.
fantasy is fantasy, porting non-realistic rules over is something i dont like

I played Dark Elves a few years back, had a lot of fun, dead High elves everywhere. but 40k is far more dear to my heart. (i love modern/futuristic weapons and warfare as opposed to days of old. just my opinion no offense to LOTR/WHFB players out there, unless you are one of those snobby aces who are so "superior" to us 40k players. if you are , then pm me, tell me 1) why you are here on FOURTY-KAY-terra, 2) would you like my DElves to make you a pin cushion or slices of meat)

haha jk about that last part :P
but i started DElves because of a friend who played only WHFB got me into the GW hobby
and he also thought his game was far far far better ( and consequently him to us )
he hated 40k with a near-repentia-level fervor.
havent talked to him since end of 8th grade ^^ haha
bolt throwers? heck. I'd side with the .75 calibur self propelled armour penetrating mass reactive explosive shells anyday
again, just my opinion, no offenses meant

I move in phases between Fantasy and 40k although for the last 2 years my Blood Dragons haven't seen the light of day.
If what you say about age groups is true then I've only got 2 years before I'm too old for 40k!

I commented on this very thing in the 40K pet peeves and its so nice to find Im not the only one at the rreceiving end of this attitude.
40K was what got into table top gaming in the first place and it will always will be the game I like the most,Ive tried loads of other systems and never realy liked any of the.
I find fantasy to bogged down in rules and uber powerfull characters and items its a game for the real rules lawyers and beardy players, cripes all the new Dwarf army needed was the Dwarf rune of extra runiness-gives automatic wins in all battles.
By the way Im 30 so does this mean I haver to be taken away and reprogrammed...?

Not one single person anywhere in the universe has the right to say what game, what army, whatever, is better than whatever else.

All the games and armies have aspects that appeal to various people and aspects which cause revulsion and loathing in others.

These are personal opinions and don't give the person the right to say what is better than what.
People who belive their opionions are there to determine what other people should think need their heads deflated as a matter of high priority.

I started war-gaming with Tyranids (my friends got me started back in 2002). I moved onto Tau to see what life was like at the other end of the spectrum.
Then we started Necromunda, then BFG.
Then we started fantasy to see what the other game is like, I have Dwarfs (drunk and rowdy, just the way I like them).

Now we're on Inquisitor.

All these games and still I wouldn't be able to give you a simple answer if you asked me what was my favorite. I simply couldn't pick.

If you come across anyone who says their game/army is better than yours, just ignore them and keep on playing. They'll soon go away.

I guess the real fascination of 40k comes with how dark and in depth it is. This is strictly my opinion, but it seems to me that 40k has way more background than any of the fantasy storylines. And for this reason, it has a more widespread and intricate appeal to people. At least this is the case for me.

where im from 40k is commonly regarded as being the 'intellectual' GW game with a far richer background and history that extrapolates real-world sources in a far more mature way than warhammer (tilea = italy!), especially when it comes to character names, planet names etc - you could look up almost all character names on an encycolpedia and find a link between some real persons name and the 40k equivalent.

even the story of the primarchs and horus' betrayal is (rather obviously) 40ks version of a mythology, blending religious tales with creation myths of various cultures (sorry about the religious reference)

as a game, however warhammer far outstrips 40k (as much as i hate it), though 2nd and especially 1st ed 40k had their own charm and character - anyone remember the clear perspex 40k vehicle targetting template?

edit: im also a big fan of real world mythologies and while most would think that would make me a fan of fantasy, in fact i find the opposite to be true - 40k has much more in common with real-world mythologies than warhammer (the lovecraftian influences for instance are an obvious example)

On the mythical references part, I quite agree.
Though Fantasy has more by way of Mythical Creatures (pegasi, chimearas, hydras, manticore) and some other ref (grail knights) 40k has the creatures by name (basilisk, gorgon) and even references old-history (Black Templars). 40k background fluff has some rich and awesome stuff though too

well warhammer does have the mythical creatures in the game.

but once you start reading fluff, you se that 40k has just as many creatures.

Vulkan killed a dragon as his initiation rite
Leman Russ wrestled giants! (not sure if the primarch stories can be read literally since they are, like i said befoe, myth. though i like to think theyre real.
