Default New to fantasy and need army advice

Ok peeps. Our resident WFB idiot Drax has started trying to direct me into playing fantasy. I'm reluctantly... possibly... may do.... accept his offer.

No I know now of use are huge fantasy players... if we were we wouldn't post on a site devoted to 40k.

So here's what I need.

Good, fun army. Nothing to over the top, just ripe for conversions.

I like High Elves, but Drax is reluctant for me to get them.

Orcs... possible

Empire... Ok, but they look like victorian ice cream sellers

Brettonians... ok, but who likes the French?

Vampire counts... drax already has

Wood elves... mart007 is getting

Dwarves... never like carnies

Dark elves... models seem turd

Chaos... I like, but drax has already

Beasts... drax has already

Ogres... this I quite like

slann - hmmm too slippy for my liking

Are there any vikings in fantasy?

vikings are marauders of chaos - sorry

i think you would enjoy the Orcs - nice an unpredicable but lots of fun to boot

high elves i have no issue with really - just thought they were a bit civilized for you

Dark elves shouldn't be too long in the re-make

ogres could be well worth some investigation too

For a starter, Lizardmen are the most forgiving as the 3 dice you choose which two to use on leadership tests is unbelievable. The Saurus have a basic 2 attacks and skinks have poison shots. You can do conversions, my Stegadon is greatly converted as so is my Slann and all my skinks (some are in water).

That being said, Ogres are awsome. The way to really win consistently with them is a bunch of 3 strong units with two butchers a decked out Tyrant and one or two Gorgers (some people will roll their eyes at two gorgers)

Ogres are going to be my next army... yeah that'll make #5 fantasy armies.

Oh one last thing, Orcs are cool, but can easily frustrate players to the point that they hate Fantasy all together, so I'd highly suggest against those for starters.

Cheers!

Well I'm about to head into the dirty realms of FB with Wood Elves (yes I know another pansy army ha ha, very funny!)

I say do Chaos, I know Draxxy baby has them, but he also has a few other armies, we can double up on one as his main army is VC.

What about those Kislev troops, they look like Vikings?

plus they aint an army in their own right - he'd need to go empire or bret.

had a look though the HE book after we spoke - i think you'd like them. always strike first, large range of options, dragons galore (sort of)

it might suit him to strike before you in combat for once though (with one exception)

he doesn't have to go for the prim and propers - he could go for a Chrace Heavy list - they are a bit more rough and ready (at least as muchg as High Elves get)

as for OKs, the limited number of units puts him off - that and Gnoblers (i spelled it right this time)

there is always a middenheim Empire army to consider - he wouldn't really be able to use the SoC rules anymore but he could go for a 'counts as' force - that would lend itself to lots of conversions. Really Krom, you need to borrow a few of my Army Books and preferably go through them with me

krom,

fun = Goblins
Funnest Gobblins = Night Gobblins.

You may not win often, but the look on your opponents face when he charges with a dragon and 3 fanatics jump out and kill the dragon is priceless.

Hmmm, I quite like the idea of making viking ogres.

Steve - I can believe it. I love the little green skins... it's there just too much green.

I've also expressed to Drax I'd love to make a Black Orc army... But I understand it can't be done

How about a Dogs of war army? You could do just about anything with that.

GW Online : Warhammer : Dogs of War : Dogs of War Miniatures

(not that I know a great deal about them!!!!!)

I would like you to know that unless you withdraw the comment about Dwarves being Carnies i will let loose- Erm... Something dreadful! Hmm... Amy Winehouses hair stylist will be set lose on you! Mwuahahahahahhahaha!

And if you want to do a viking army there was an article on the Norse in WD a while back. The Norse are vikings as close as you can get. They are chaos but don't have to have all the demons and stuff. Plus you would have to convert. You could do an Empire/Brettonian viking army or indeed a Dark Elf one. And the Dark Elves are being redone very soon.

I'm going towards Ogre Kingdoms I must admit. Though I'm split.

Viking ogres... or ogre pirates.

It's either horned helmets and fur or peg legs and bandanas.

Tough choice!

Mart... stop buying and finish your eldar.

In GW yesterday and I found out I can actually use forest board and move scenery and stuff and attack you with it. But because neither of you two have dwarves, there's not a great deal you can do about. Hazzaaar for my forest board!

what exactly does this mean? are you getting at the fact that the dwarfs are good at anti magic?

i can still gear a list with any army to be heavily anti magic at the expense of something else.

btw i wouldn't bother using the spell for its attacking option, just the movement

you were also told by the staff that the wood elves can see 6" in to and out of a wood - this is incorrect. it was an old rule, but isn't there anymore

and pod, my vote is for the pirate ogres
