well i'm not exactly an expert on using necrons but i do have a fair bit of experience in loosong to them. one word for ya...monolith! not only is it as hard as a box of coffin nails but it allows you to teleport your models about the board. you can't go far wrong with a 'lith in you collection.

well let's see... there's only really 2 general tactical ploys for the necrons due to their lack of unit choice.

option 1 - the phalanx of doom:
- is built around a solid core of necron warriors and supported by monolith/s and 2 res-orb toting lords on foot.
- includes a healthy number of destroyers for long ranged fire supression and anti-vehicle ability. (note: take heavy destroyers instead now as 5th edition has really, really put the beats on the godly gauss rule the necrons enjoy!)
- uses the monolith/s for their ability to grant re-rolls on the necron's "we'll be back" rolls through teleportation.
also keeps the army from getting bogged down in assault with the teleportation ability.
- destroys the enemy through sheer volume of firepower and the ability to outlast anything!

option 2 - the terror-bomb assault force
- uses warriors simply for numbers and keeping the army's 'phase-out' number reletively high
- includes 8-10 flayed ones who are supported by 6-8 pariahs. the pariahs stay behind the flayed ones for protection, and are there to make the flayed ones nearly unstoppable in assault!
- includes 4-6 wraiths supported by a large swarm of scarabs for a lightning fast assault force.
- requires a monolith for generating those all-important re-rolls to your WBB rolls.
- is brutally effective against heavily armoured oppents thanks to the nasty warscythes carried by the pariahs and necrons lord/s.

so, one option gives you an extremely shooty army that will win out any war of attrition and can stay mobile enough through teleportation to avoid most combats...
the other option lets you get your hands dirty and when it works, really put the beat-down on even hard-core assault forces! the main tactic here is that the pariahs work to really enhance the effectiveness of the flayed ones who become nearly untouchable if your opponent keeps failing those Ld7 tests the flayed ones inflict on their victims!

hope this helps,
cheers!

Mostly true but here is an easier way to get the same Effect.

Necron Lord on foot with, Veil of darkness and Rez Orb >=D put him in with a squad of immortals and your opponent will cry. (lets you deep strike around the map shooting him up lol) Also you will want 3 heavy destroyers each a squad of its own so you can shoot 3 different targets and Eliminate them with out worry. Also i suggest at least 6 destroyers due to the fact EVERYONE fears them due to there heavy fire power and the fact they get 3 shots each! (not to mention a looooong range). But the main point of necrons so far for me is DON'T be afraid to fall back from your enemy try to keep them in weapons range but no closer, since if nids get close you are hooped regardless of what you do.

this is the one that keeps clobbering me. done right it's damn nigh unbeatable unless you can take out the 'lith

ignore the c'tan untill you start getting into the 3000/4000pts range... they suck up far too many valuable pts you will need to spend on models with the "Necron" special rule. (ie: those models which count towards your 'phase-out' total)

flayed ones aren't garbage like most people think - they simply need the army built around their use! when supported by pariahs, they're some of the game's best assault troops - they're only drawback being the lack of any kind of ability to open-up 3+ or better saves... (just keep a lord w/warscythe in the unit to crack those tougher nuts!)

the problem with destroyers is that they're also 'necron' models, thus they count for your phase-out. to use them well, you need to invest in lots of them as they are prime targets! (they're far fewer in number, but more lethal than a warrior or immortal...)
the thing you're going to have to do is pick 1 or 2 'specialist' units and build you force around them. so if you want say destroyers, then you're going to need at least 6 to be effective and thus you'll have to ignore the option for wraiths... (key point; it's easy to kill 3-4 T5/3+ save models in one round of shooting. killing 6+ is a wee bit harder!) keep your destroyers near eachother too so that they will benefit from WBB untill every last one of them is knocked down...

so basically, pick a play style, and build specifically to that one single-minded option... necrons lack choice, but when built right and used well, they're unstoppable!

cheers!
