Default Help for a noob?

I am hoping to put together a formal Necron army. If I can, I will use it in a tournament that is coming up. There's just one, small problem...

I dont have a Codex.

I might be getting one soon, but, in the rather likely case that fails, can someone help me?

I need the points cost, as well as certain other details anyone feels are necessary, of these units.

Nightbringer.

Necron Lord.

Necron Warriors.

Immortals.

Tomb Spyders.

Pariahs.

And, attack spyders.

If you choose to help, thanks. If not, I'll try to track down a codex.
Hopefully it won;t change too much with 5th ed coming out. It would suck to buy a 4th ed, only to find out it's been completely revised.

well, you really need to buy your own codex because it's rather illegal for any of us to simply give you all the rules/states on-line!
read through your codex 2-3 times to get a really good understandign of the necrons and how they work.

keep in mind the basic tactic that most people use against the 'crons; phase them out. build your army around that concept and thus, make it as difficult as possible for any opponent to phase you out...

avoid the temptation of going for the phalanx of doom! yes it's a tournament winning list, but it's boring as feth and leads to very, very dull games!
get some variety in your list. it is possible to have a 'good' army that isn't purely warriors + 2 lords w/res orb + 2 monoliths... i'd avoid using the c'tan though for a tournament list, they super pts-heavy and you need those pts for your monolith!

as for their metal models, typically you only want 2 units of metal models as you really need to max-out on each type of 'necron' you're going to include. so if you want say flayed ones, then you want 8-10! if you like the idea of wraiths, then you need to take at least 6, if not all 9 in order to stop opponent's from having a field day with knocking them down and denying you your 'we'll be back' rolls...

hope this helps,
cheers!

Ya... get the codex... the army is very basic and unless they are gone, there are lots of freebies on the GW US website that can help you get a feel for the point cost and rules the necrons use.

I think stitch summed it up nicely... lots of warriors, one or two big squads of metal models (flayed ones and immortals seem to be the most favored), a monolith and if you get to the 2000pt mark you should have enough points for two lords (one destoryer, one foot) and several destoryer squads.

Oh, and stitch, what is the phalanx of doom? I'm assuming it is just a crapload of warriors backed up by a foot lord and monolith?

Yep experiments right, you need to buy the codex, they arent that expensive and they have bits of fluff about units too usually!

I was unaware that is was illegal to give or receive such information... Thanks for the tip. I'll try to pick up the Codex. I should get paid next week, hopefully I can convince my father to give me a ride down there.

I'll try to put some variety into my army. Thanks again.

HQ: 2 lords w/res orb
Heavy Support: 2x monolith
Troops: 58 warriors
total; 1800pts

slight variation is to knock off 1 monolith and thus you get the nasty 72 warriors!

sure it's pretty easy to win with that list, but you're unlikely to ever have any fun as it's really just rolling a shitload of dice while your opponent tries in vain to kill off your warriors! (who will always get their we'll be back roll thanks to the 48" coverage of the two res orbs!)

cheers!

Unless you are one of those nasty people who enjoy winning too much...

Still... that does sound like a pretty unbeatable list. One of the reasons I like the necrons, they don't have a lot of options, but the warrior is the best basic unit in the game. Period. Nothing comes close (except maybe space marine... but I'm biased).

Okay...

Im figuring out a list based on dropped bits of info on the GW website... damn, I need a codex...

So far, I have figured out that Warriors are CENSORED BY WRIT OF THE INQUISITION points, but unless I want an army of over 110 Warriors, I'm going to need a bit longer for the list... I'll edit when I have it.

EDIT: ... I can't believe I just seriously posted in the wrong thread.

I wouldn't worry about a new necron codex coming out in the near future.
GW will take about two years to sort out the all the armies that desperately need updates before they move onto updating the rest of them.

I hate facing necrons...they just don't stay down. I've never seen a list as evil as Stitch's though.

The list stitch posted would get owned in my local playing group.....Monoliths just don't live long no mater how you look at it. Heavy Destroyers are the way to go. (For 5th there about are only way to take out tanks as well)

The people I play against favour missile launchers. Not as much tank killey goodness as you'd find in a lascannon but are good enough for the vehicles that are most common in our games.
I'm the only one with enough S10 Ap1 weapons to make monoliths look like sieves.

Your Lucky then i play against people that love tanks T_T and ap 1 weapons (which makes massing necron warriors\immortals\heavy destoyers really fun since i get about x3 the amount of shots they do at a higher bs)
