| Hey all, All things change. After years of playing 40k, I've decided to get back into WHFB. I just picked up the Empire army book on Sunday and after reading it, I have started making a list. Anyway, my first (of many) questions is how large should Empire "parent" infantry units be...20, 25 or 30 models? I'm planning on having 3 "parent" infantry units with deatacments (handgunners) for each. Any thoughts? ~fearlessgod~ |

Blog Entries: 1 | well the absolute bare minimum for a combat regiment is 20 (5x4) giving you max combat resolution rank bonus, but if you take even 1 casualty you start to loose static combat resolution. with this in mind 25-30 is a better number. swordsmen are the best infantry in the empire core as they benefit from 4+ save in combat and higher ws and i values. give 'em a detatchment of either 10 halbardiers (for high toughness foes) or 10 malitia (for low toughness hoards). ranged detatchments should be smaller, 5 being about right.

| well, after my first few warband games i've found that you really need your main combat units to be at least 25 or so models strong, simply to soak up incoming missile fire. as for detachments, thanks to some wise advice i've gone with 9 halberdiers for the counter-charge. 9 lets you deploy in a 3x3 formation with keeps your deploment zone from becoming overly cramped, and also means that you generally deny 2-3 enemy models from attacking back as you will only contact upto 3 models. best of all, you still have the unit strength to cancel out the enemy's ranks! my second detachment is a unit of 8 free companies who can either be used as bait, or throw out a good mass of attacks against other basic infantry/cavalry... a unit of 5 archers also makes a rather interesting and usefull guard unit for your main block. good for screening your main unit as the archers are skirmishers and when the enemy declairs a charge, just have the archers flee! cheers!

Blog Entries: 1 | stitch, don't you need a unit to have a certain frontage as well as a unit strength of 5 to negate the rank bonus? i thought it had to be at least 4-5 wide, although i am working off the old rule book here. **feeds stitch from a bag of dis-satisfied starbucks customers**

the 5 wide formation is needed to gain rank bonus - which is why all heavy cavalry except bretonnians are now better off in units of 6-8 models! (as it's rather pointless spending 300pts or so just to ensure a +1 rank bonus...) *** happily munches away!*** cheers!

| 15 to 25 ... the best 20! Ranks count only if you got ranks with 5 or more miniatures. I play more defensively so i play lots of spearmen. I recomend spearmen as main troops! they use shields and fight in 2 ranks. You convinced me... i need another spearmen unit XD
